We’ve all been there. You’re on a long trip, and by the end of it, you feel completely drained. Why does this happen? And more importantly, how can we avoid it? We will explore reasons we get tired after travelling and offer tips on staying energized during your journey.

Recently, I had a few days off work and decided to go on a road trip. By the end of it, I was exhausted! What was meant to be a relaxing break ended up being quite tiring. After some reflection, I think it boiled down to a few common factors:

1. Late Planning

Not planning is planning to fail. If you wait until the last minute to make your travel arrangements, it will take much more effort than planning ahead. This means that when you finally hit the road, you are already mentally and physically drained before you even start your journey!

But what causes late planning because we all seem to be doing it? Well, mostly it’s because of our busy lifestyles. We are constantly trying to multitask and get things done in a limited time, making planning difficult.

2. Sleep Deprivation

I have heard it enough times, “I rarely sleep before a trip!” Sleep deprivation is one of the main culprits behind feeling tired after travelling. Not getting enough rest before and during your journey can affect your energy levels.

Most of us are already sleep-deprived because of our work schedules, and adding a long journey worsens it. So make sure to get enough rest before your trip and squeeze in some extra sleep during the journey.

3. Hectic Travel Schedules

When planning a vacation or business trip, we tend to pack in as much as possible into our schedule. When this happens, it’s very likely you will be running from one place to another, trying to make the most of your time. This often leaves us feeling exhausted by the end of the day!

4. Unfamiliarity with Destination

Exploring a new city or country can be exciting, but it can also affect your energy levels. This is because we have to use more of our mental capacity to familiarize ourselves with the new surroundings. Getting used to different cultures, languages, and customs takes time.

Come to think of it; hectic pick-up cab rides also count as unfamiliarity. Imagine landing in a new city and trying to understand how the cab rates work. Moreover, you may not be familiar with your hotel and have to look for it frantically. All of this can lead to a tired feeling.

5. Lower Oxygen Levels

If you are taking a flight, you will likely experience a decrease in oxygen levels (hypoxia). This is because the air pressure inside an aircraft cabin is lower than that at ground level. Therefore, it becomes difficult for your body to take in enough oxygen, making you feel tired and sluggish.

6. Jet Lag

Jet lag occurs when the body’s natural circadian rhythm doesn’t sync with its new environment. This can be caused when traveling by air or even on long-distance road trips across time zones. The most common symptoms of jet lag include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia.

Now that we know the reasons behind travel fatigue, let’s look at how to reduce it.

Identifying a problem and its cause is one thing, but how do you actually avoid it? Here are a few tips to help you stay energized during your journey: 

1. Plan Early

The key here is to plan. Planning early will give you time to make informed decisions and fewer surprises along the way. Make sure to check things like flight times, hotel rates, and weather conditions before you set out on your trip.

Packing in advance can also be a great help. Have an idea about the type of clothes you need to carry and pack them early. This will give you more time to focus on other aspects of your travel plan.

2. Adjust to Different Time Zones

As mentioned, jet lag is one of the biggest reasons for fatigue while traveling. To avoid jet lag, adjust your body clock to the new time zone. Start eating, sleeping, and exercising according to your destination’s local time.

There is a temptation to catch up on some sleep once you’ve arrived at your destination, but it can make the jet lag worse. Instead, try to stick to your regular sleeping schedule.

3. Do Light Exercises

Exercising can help boost energy levels and improve blood circulation during long journeys. Do simple exercises like walking or stretching between flights. When on a road trip, try to make frequent stops and do some stretching exercises. This will help you stay energized for the rest of your journey.

After the journey, it is advisable to do some light exercises in the morning. This will help kick-start your day and prepare you for a new adventure.

4. Have Enough Sleep

Sleep is essential to maintain energy levels while traveling. We often neglect this factor because of tight schedules and deadlines. However, prioritizing sleep should be at the top of your list when on a trip.

Make sure to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night. Also, try to schedule some nap time during the day to recharge.

5. Get a Massage

The best way to relax after a long flight or drive is by getting a massage. Book yourself an appointment with a masseuse or try out massage therapy at the hotel.

This is especially helpful if you are traveling for business and need to stay energized throughout the day. Massage therapy can reduce stress, improve blood circulation, and give your body a sense of relaxation.

6. Go Slow on Your Body

Most times, our schedules are so tight that we forget to take care of ourselves. This can lead to exhaustion and fatigue when traveling.

When planning your itinerary, include some rest time in between activities. This will allow you to recharge and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the journey.

7. Don’t Compromise on Comfort

The type of clothes you wear, the type of food you eat, and the activities you do all influence how tired you will feel. Choose comfortable clothes like leggings and shoes when packing for your trip.

Also, try to stick to healthy meals that are rich in vitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates. This will help keep you energized and focused throughout the day.


It is possible to get tired when travelling. But if you plan correctly, adjust to different time zones, do light exercises, get enough sleep, and maintain a comfortable lifestyle, you can reduce the fatigue associated with travelling.
